Looking For Alaska By: John Green

Title: Looking For Alaska
Author: John Green
HARDBACK
Amount of Pages: 221
Publisher: Dutton Books
Release Date: March 3, 2005
Geared Towards: Teens
From: My School Library

“How will we ever get out of this labyrinth of suffering? ~ A.Y.”

Summary (From Front Flap):
First Drink
First Prank
First Friend
First Girl
Last Words

Miles Halter is fascinated by famous last words- and tired of his safe life at home. He leaves for boarding school to seek what the dying poet Francois Rabelais called the “Great Perhaps.” Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young, Cleaver, funny, screwed-up, and dead sexy; Alaska will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps.

Wdebo’s Review: All of John Green’s books seem to have similar characters and plot, nerdy, friendless guy meets super amazing girl, girl seems like she could have no interest in guy, guy gets depressed but in the end he gets the girl. Even through these similarities there are always little quarks to the storyline that make each one special and an amazing read in its own way.
Looking For Alaska was very enjoyable in the whole similar plot way of course, but also because of John Green’s writing. John Green writes in a very sarcastic manner and sounds exactly how a teenager sounds…he adds in random funny points...hehe he has very random humor which is nice...and does turn around some of the sadness.

Even though Miles can be pretty annoying and just plain stupid sometimes...there is something enjoyable about him...there is always something enjoyable about John Green's characters...even though they can be total annoying pests sometimes.

Cafe Cover Chat: Hm, I do like the cover...it has this simple philosophical thing going on...but it's still not my fav cover ever. (B+)

All in all, a great book by John Green, total thumbs up for it! A must read for John Green fans and those who are just getting into his books.

Grade: B+

Little Black Lies By: Tish Cohen

Title: Little Black Lies
Author: Tish Cohen
HARDBACK
Amount of Pages: 320
Publisher: EgmountUSA
Release Date: October 13, 2009
Geared Towards: Teens
Thanks to Goodman Media for sending me an ARC~

"(What Carling Burnack Gets=What Carling Burnack Wants)2"

Summary (From B.O.B):

Boston's most elite high school is a high-wire act
and Sara Black is losing her balance

Sara Black might as well be wearing a scarlet letter on her school uniform when she walks into Anton High for the first time. Anton is no ordinary public school-you can't even get in after freshman year (unless, like Sara, your dad is the janitor). But when nobody knows your past, you can become a whole new person.

For Sara, being new is the perfect escape from everything she's avoiding-like the fact that her mother has run off with her science teacher, and that her father's OCD is only barely under control. People think that she's from London, England, instead of Lundon, Massachusetts. But when one of the most popular girls at Anton starts looking into Sara's past, her little lies could come back to haunt her...

Wdebo's Review: Little Black Lies may seem at first like one of those cliche stories...you know the kind where the girl changes herself to fit in with the "popular" girls who are total meanies. But there was something deeper then that, though it was cliche (I won't deny it) but there is just this heart in it.

The writing was way awesome...I really don't know how to explain it but I really love Tish Cohen's way of writing...as much as I enjoyed this story...I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if the writing was about something more "mature," her writing seems more suited for that, but her writing about mean girls is pretty good too...just very cliche.

Sara was a very good character...very smart (which is a nice change from dense characters in these kinds of novels), the only thing that bothered me a lot about her, was of course, her need to go along with the popular and all those lies...it was so obvious that it would end badly. Even though it also ended very clichely.

I also really like Charlie, he was very sweet...but just way too gullible...he seems like such a great dad...its sad that Sara kept lying about him.

Cafe Cover Chat: I really love the cover...all the poses are great...and of course...the hippe VW bug...awesome possum :) (A-)

All in all, this was a great story, that is a nice easy read...but also sticks in some information that made me feel smart while reading it...lol kinda like reading a chick lit ya version of Da Vinche Code minus the whole running around Europe for clues and just staying put in a private school for smart kids.

Grade : A-

I'm Not Worthy - Jay Chou

-Eng Subbed-

I love this song!! But it's sad.

I'm pretty sure the actress is Alice Tzeng (Not sure what her last name is) but I'm pretty sure she was also the main actress in Jay's Secret movie. She looked pretty ugh in the movie...but she's so pretty in this mv. AND I think she was also in Show's Gao Xiao MV [Click HERE for the vid-unsubbed, sorry] She's so lucky!! Show AND Jay??!! But she is an awesome actress :)

In the end, the words on the side say..."If only you weren't Jay Chou how great would that be?"

Beautiful By: Amy Reed

Title: Beautiful
Author: Amy Reed
HARDBACK
Amount of Pages: 240
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Release Date: October 6, 2009
Geared Towards: Older Teens

"She is someone new, a blank slate they have named beautiful. That is what I am now: beautiful, with this new body and face and hair and clothes. Beautiful, with this erasing of history."

Summary: Cassie was one of those chubby invisible girls with bad hair when she was at Bainbridge. All the girls there were the ambitious types, the kind who thought about Harvard and Yale before they passed puberty. Cassie never fit in with them, so when she moves from Brainbridge to the suburb of Seattle she is determined to make her mark and change herself up to become one of the "beautiful" girls.

Cassie is instantly swept into the group into a world she had never/could never imagine. Filled with drugs, alcohol and sex. Cassie is frightened yet excited, not sure what her future will bring. Her excitment draws her into numbness, numbness from her "friend" her "boyfriend" her "life." Until she starts spiraling down and down and down...until she fades away...one "beautiful" person gone from the world.

Wdebo's Review: Ok, I've had the generic portion of this review up since Friday, and I am only now getting to it...how horrible huh? Haha...anyways here is the review...

I remember seeing the summary for this book and just thinking of it as one of those good girl goes bad, drinks, does a little drugs, not her thing then goes back to being a goody-goody two shoes. But it wasn't, it was nothing like that...this book was raw and real. Amazingly written...I enjoyed it immensly.

Though, it still don't understand how Cassie could have change so much...one second she feels weird about saying the s word and practically the next page later, she's cussing like a sailor who just got stabbed by his own sword. Also, I don't understand why she wants to be like them so much...that doesn't sound like a lot of fun...puking out your guts, not being able to eat, and being with a bunch of creeping guys...not my idea of a day in the park. But apart from that, she's a really great character and does grow (in the wrong direction but slowly comes back).

Cover Chit Chat: I like the cover a lot...except her face is really blotchy...you would think that a person who wears a lot of foundation would cover up her blotchyness. And the lipstick writing contrasts beautifully with the white background. (A-)

All in all, a wonderfully written novel for older teens to enjoy (Defidently not reccomeneded for younger readers) very interesting plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat until you finish it.

Contest: Beautiful By: Amy Reed

-CLOSED-

Yeah!! Beautiful is coming out tomorrow :) And I am so excited to read it! To celebrate I have 5 copies to giveaway. I know...intense huh? :)

So...here are some information.

When Cassie moves from the tiny town where she has always lived to a suburb of Seattle, she is determined to leave her boring, good-girl existence behind. This is Cassie’s chance to stop being invisible and become the kind of girl who’s worth noticing.

Stepping into her new identity turns out to be easier than Cassie could have ever imagined...one moment, one choice, will change everything.

Cassie’s new existence both thrills and terrifies her. Swept into a world of illicit parties and social landmines, she sheds her virginity, embraces the numbness she feels from the drugs, and floats through it all, knowing that she is now called beautiful. She ignores the dangers of her fast-paced life…but she can’t sidestep the secrets and the cruelty.

Cassie is trapped in a swift downward spiral tinged with violence and abuse, and no one—not even the one person she thought she could trust—can help her now.

Sounds awesome huh? Click HERE for an excerpt of the book!

In My Mailbox (15)

Wow, it has been a while since my last IMM huh? lol.

So, it is was a slow week this week, I only recieved one book, but I am looking forward to three more next week.

I "stole" this idea from The Story Siren...

Once Dead, Twice Shy

[From Booklist]: Madison is dead. After she fled her prom with a mysterious guy and ended up in a crashed car—only to survive and then be struck down by this guy’s magical sword—she has existed in a curious state of purgatory. She still walks around, interacts with others, eats, and sleeps, only now she does so in the company of Barnabas, a light reaper—a kind of angel who fights off dark reapers trying to harvest the souls of people about to make fate-altering decisions. There are also timekeepers, dark wings, guardian angels, seraphs, and magical amulets. If you’re already clutching your head in despair, you won’t be alone: the architecture of Harrison’s world is confusing even after several explanations. However, for ardent fans of the good-looking undead, this has plenty of verve, an enjoyable role reversal (Madison is constantly rescuing the good-guy hunk), and is quite fun when the supernatural characters are placed within a regular high-school milieu. Like it or not, a sequel is rising from the underworld as we speak.

I recieved from Isa's contest. Click HERE for her blog. I am currently reading it, it's pretty good, in the paranormal exciting way.

Well, that was short lol... :)

So, what did you recieve this week?

Title: Shadow Kiss: A Vampire Academy Novel
Author: Richelle Mead
PAPERBACK
Amount of Pages: 443
Publisher: Penguin Group
Release Date: November 13, 2008
Geared Towards: Older Teens
Extra Info: Shadow Kiss is the third book in the Vampire Academy series.

Summary (From Amazon): Is Rose's fate to kill the person she loves most? It's springtime at St. Vladimir's Academy, and Rose Hathaway is this close to graduation. Since Mason's death, Rose hasn't been feeling quite right. She has dark flashbacks in the middle of practice, can't concentrate in class, and has terrifying dreams about Lissa. But Rose has an even bigger secret .... She's in love with Dimitri. And this time, it-s way more than a crush. Then Strigoi target the academy in the deadliest attack in Moroi history, and Dimitri is taken. Rose must protect Lissa at all costs, but keeping her best friend safe could mean losing Dimitri forever...

Wdebo's Review: Oh wow, it has been a long time since I read Frostbite (around 7 months now) so...yeah, I hate reading a sequal like a long time after reading the first book...it just makes them harder to get into...well, I'll do my best...

When I first started reading Shadow Kiss, I was like...oh no this is going to be hard to go into...and as I began to read the first few pages I thought, man, this book is going downhill, I think I might even like Frostbite more then this. But as I got back into the academy, an old familiarity started to wash over me and I started to get more and more hooked on the story. Until the middle, when I just couldn't put it down.

This book added everything, romance, action and, of course, total girl power! And what else did it have...oh yeah, Dimitri. Dimitri is awesome...so calm and just well, hot. And I still really like Christopher, he was the best during the end :)

Cover Chit Chat: I had the newer cover (the picture above is the older cover) I like the older cover more it has more information then a giant head and a hand holding a strand of hair from the giant head. But, if I was to grade the cover I have I will have to give it a (B-) and a (B+) for the old cover.

All in all, Vampire Academy fans will not be disappointed! And those who love reading vampire stories start Vampire Academy NOW!

Grade: B+
