Giveaway + Excerpt: "Gilded Wings: The Angel Chronicles, Book 2"

To celebrate the release of "Gilded Wings: The Angel Chronicles, Book 2" here is a short excerpt from the book.

~~~
“Someone MUCH more important, Anya,” Drew continued, as he pulled her away from his friend, “is Mitchell Charles Carrow. Your benefactor—not to mention mine,” he added with a smile.
The master of the household stood at the head of the table like a king greeting his new guest. Like his older son he had jet black hair, but the brilliant blue eyes of his younger son were beaming from his kind face. He walked gracefully around the corner of the table and bowed dramatically. “Don’t listen to either of these silly boys, Miss Anya. It’s a pleasure to welcome you and Gregori into my home. I’m so happy that Myles will have a friend to keep him company. Drew’s friendship did wonders for Max, and I’m sure that Myles and Gregori will become the best of friends.”
Anya curtsied before the master of the house. “I can’t thank you enough for your kindness, Mr. Carrow.”
“No need.” The elegant man smiled back. “Drew tells me you’re an excellent tutor and a fine young woman. Myles will be lucky to have someone like you lead him into manhood.”
Anya shivered, praying that she would live up to his high expectations. “I think Mr. Parrish may have talked me up a bit too much. I would hate to fail you, sir.”
The younger Carrow male let out a laugh beside Drew. “Don’t worry. The Irish are known for their exaggeration. We don’t expect you to sit atop the pedestal he’s placed you on.”
Anya nodded, trying to understand the meaning of the young master’s words.
Blog Tour: Book Review + Guest Post + Giveaway: Dear Teen Me: Authors Write Letters to Their Teen Selves
Title: Dear Teen Me: Authors Write Letters to Their Teen Selves
Edited By: E. Kristen Anderson and Miranda Kenneally
PAPERBACK
Amount of Pages: 192
Publisher: Zest Books
Release Date: October 31, 2012
Geared Towards: All Readers
From: Publisher (ARC Copy)
Extra Info: This is an anthology of letters written by authors. It is in full color
Summary (From B.O.B): Growing pains are an essential part of teenage life, for better and for worse. Some "mistakes"turn into positive, life-changing experiences, and some apparent triumphs seem in retrospect, like low points. Some first kisses leave you feeling on top of the world, and others can mae you want to hide undre a rock. In DEAR TEEN ME, your favorite YA authors-including Lauren Oliver, Ellen Hopkins, Tom Angleberger, and Carrie Jones-revisit critical moments from their young lives and offer advice and guidance to their teeange selves. So pick a page, and find out...
*Who found true love at 18?
*Who wishes she'd had more fun in high school instead of studying so hard?
*And who skipped prom to go to a Grateful Dead concert, only to wind up stranded?
The letters cover a wide range of topics, including physical abuse, body issues, bullying, friendship, love, and enough insecurities to fill an auditorium. So whether you're a theatre kid, a band geek, a bad boy, a good girl, a loner, a stoner, a nerd or a jock, you'll find friends-and a lot of familiar faces-in DEAR TEEN ME.
Wdebo's Review: Once I saw the summary of DEAR TEEN ME, I was instantly intrigued and knew I just had to read it and I am so happy I did. This book is filled with letters from all kinds of authors so reading it, I saw a lot of familiar (and not so familiar faces) and will definitely help you to relive all of your good (and not so pleasent) teenage years. And for readers that are not yet teens it will give them something to look forward to (or dread) later in their lives.
The topics of the letters span to all sorts of different topics. They range from very funny, lighthearted warnings to deep issues. No matter what stage of life you are currently in, there will definitely be at least one story which you will be able to identify with. I especially liked the letters about being weird with "weird friends" because that was totally how my friends and I were like in high school. We were the nerds the holed up in the library and talked books and other things (like dramas) 24/7.
I also liked the fact that is was in full color, it just made it look cooler and was much more fun to read.
Cafe Cover Chat: The cover is pretty good but not the best. I like the postal theme. (B-)
All in all, a great anthology that is sure to keep you busy for a couple of fun, nostalgic hours.
Grade: B+
~~~

For a "guest post," I asked a few of my friends to create their own "Dear Teen Me"s and this is what they came up with. Enjoy!

Dear Teen Me,

Don't be afraid of trying new things. You'll never know what you are capable of until you actually try it. Have fun and be surprised!

Pricilla

Dear Teen Me,
You'll fall in love...and out of love many times before you find Mr. Right, so don't obsess over the first or even fifth. Don't be stupid just to prove a point. Lastly, Miss Congeniality taught me to S.I.N.G, and you should learn it well!
Always Yours,

Liz

Dear Teen Me,
There are some pretty huge changes coming in your life, so just go with it! Never forget who you are, don't worry too much about the future because everything will work out, and most importantly, you'll get freckles from too much sun exposure so stop trying to get tan.
Lots of love,

Lisa

Dear Teen Me,
Forever cherish the good times and learn from the bad. Always stay true to yourself and have faith that life is on your side. Listen to others but remember to think critically about what they say and let curiosity be your guiding light. Oh and don't forgot about that thing you left that time in the room of your best friend's boyfriend's cousin's house.You'll need it back.
Your Number One Fan,Steph

Dear Teen Me,
Remember: "Life is a great big canvas and you should throw all the paint on it you can"~Danny Kaye. That red streak of anger you slap on when your close friends betray you...it will be covered by a multitude of blue dots that represent all your newly formed friendships.
The black paint that drenches the entire canvas will be washed away by a fiery orange-yellow. And along the way, you'll add playful purple swirls and splatters of lime green.
In the end, through the good ties and the bad, you'll turn out to be a wonderful masterpiece.
Take this piece of advice and start painting.
Yours truly,
Older me

Dear Teen Me,
Eat the damn food. Keep it down.
Sincerely,

Someone who cares.

Dear Teen Me,

Your teens will be over before you know it, so stop moping because the past is over, and jump head first into the adventures of everyday life. Cherish time spent with loved ones RIGHT NOW and don't forget to live in the moment. Take it from me: your life will work out how it's supposed to. So don't sweat the small stuff, don't sell yourself short, and keep that head up, kid.
Yours truly,
Older Rissa

Dear Teen Me,
I want to promise you right here, right now that everything turns out okay. There are some storms ahead but you know what? You will never be alone.
Hannah

Dear Teen Me,
Every day is a new chance for you to ensure that the future isn't like the past. Lighten up!
I love you,
Eva

Dear Teen Me,
Sweet girl, don’t be so shy or so scared. You will see, honey, everything (and I mean everything) in this world happens for a reason. Hold on to those sweet moments at home and at school because you will miss them dearly. Love and accept yourself.

Dear Teen Me,

Focus on the important stuff in life, more precisely, the important people, like true friends and above all your mom. She did everything and gave everything she had for you, so don't disrespect her to be "cool." The people you are trying to be cool for will move on it life and forget about you as you will them. Your mom will love you and care about you forever (as will your aunt and other family members/true friends).
Much love,
Mariam
PS-Don't watch Gossip Girl or other teen crap-it does you no good!

Book Trailer + Giveaway: 52 Reasons to Hate My Father By Jessica Brody

Hi World!

Long time no see! (Especially given that it is summer...hmmm) Anyways, I've been MIA lately because I was in Taiwan for a bit over a month. It was wonderful and I crazy nice break from my stressful term of College *Shivers just thinking about the horrible memories*

Anyways, I wanna share an awesome book trailer and giveaway that I was recently shown. It's for Jessica Brody's new book 52 REASONS TO HATE MY FATHER and like all of her book trailers, the movie trailer-esque quality is super fun and makes me really want to read it. Come on. Spoiled heiress and cute "babysitter"? Sign me up!

Summary (From Goodreads):

Lexington Larrabee has never to work a day in her life. After all, she’s the heiress to the multi-billion-dollar Larrabee Media empire. And heiresses are not supposed to work. But then again, they’re not supposed to crash brand new Mercedes convertibles into convenience stores on Sunset Blvd either.

Which is why, on Lexi’s eighteen birthday, her ever-absent, tycoon father decides to take a more proactive approach to her wayward life. Every week for the next year, she will have to take on a different low-wage job if she ever wants to receive her beloved trust fund. But if there’s anything worse than working as a maid, a dishwasher, and a fast-food restaurant employee, it’s dealing with Luke, the arrogant, albeit moderately attractive, college intern her father has assigned to keep tabs on her.

In a hilarious “comedy of heiress” about family, forgiveness, good intentions, and best of all, second chances, Lexi learns that love can be unconditional, money can be immaterial, and, regardless of age, everyone needs a little saving. And although she might have 52 reasons to hate her father, she only needs one reason to love him.
Trailer....

Right now Jessica also has an awesome giveaway in which one lucky winner gets a "Complete Heiress Makeover"! Sound fun? Check out the details HERE!

CONTEST: The Discovery of Jeanne Baret

Title: The Discovery of Jeanne Baret
Author: Glynis Ridley
Summary (From Amazon): The year was 1765. Eminent botanist Philibert Commerson had just been appointed to a grand new expedition: the first French circumnavigation of the world. As the ships’ official naturalist, Commerson would seek out resources—medicines, spices, timber, food—that could give the French an edge in the ever-accelerating race for empire.

Jeanne Baret, Commerson’s young mistress and collaborator, was desperate not to be left behind. She disguised herself as a teenage boy and signed on as his assistant. The journey made the twenty-six-year-old, known to her shipmates as “Jean” rather than “Jeanne,” the first woman to ever sail around the globe. Yet so little is known about this extraordinary woman, whose accomplishments were considered to be subversive, even impossible for someone of her sex and class.

When the ships made landfall and the secret lovers disembarked to explore, Baret carried heavy wooden field presses and bulky optical instruments over beaches and hills, impressing observers on the ships’ decks with her obvious strength and stamina. Less obvious were the strips of linen wound tight around her upper body and the months she had spent perfecting her masculine disguise in the streets and marketplaces of Paris.

Expedition commander Louis-Antoine de Bougainville recorded in his journal that curious Tahitian natives exposed Baret as a woman, eighteen months into the voyage. But the true story, it turns out, is more complicated.

In The Discovery of Jeanne Baret, Glynis Ridley unravels the conflicting accounts recorded by Baret’s crewmates to piece together the real story: how Baret’s identity was in fact widely suspected within just a couple of weeks of embarking, and the painful consequences of those suspicions; the newly discovered notebook, written in Baret’s own hand, that proves her scientific acumen; and the thousands of specimens she collected, most famously the showy vine bougainvillea.

Ridley also richly explores Baret’s awkward, sometimes dangerous interactions with the men on the ship, including Baret’s lover, the obsessive and sometimes prickly naturalist; a fashion-plate prince who, with his elaborate wigs and velvet garments, was often mistaken for a woman himself; the sour ship’s surgeon, who despised Baret and Commerson; even a Tahitian islander who joined the expedition and asked Baret to show him how to behave like a Frenchman.

But the central character of this true story is Jeanne Baret herself, a working-class woman whose scientific contributions were quietly dismissed and written out of history—until now. Anchored in impeccable original research and bursting with unforgettable characters and exotic settings, The Discovery of Jeanne Baret offers this forgotten heroine a chance to bloom at long last.

MY PERSONAL HISTORY OF E-BOOKS

With e-books so popular, I thought I'd share some of experiences with electronic books. I know to most readers, it seems like e-books just suddenly sprang up last year and seem to be taking over the publishing world. But you might be surprised to know that I sold my first e-book over ten years ago. It wasn't an easy process, either. I went through ALL the same steps as I would have with a traditional publisher.

In 1999, I attended a writing conference at a castle where an e-book editor spoke and talked about this new method for publishing. I love to try new things, so I pulled out some manuscripts that hadn't sold yet and sent them to HardShell Word Factory. It took a long time to go through the submission process, then when my books were accepted (for middle-schoolers) I had to wait my turn for editing and for the cover art. They had their own artist -- a talented young man who was sadly murdered a few years ago -- and he did the covers for MELISSA'S MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, MAIL-ORDER MONSTER, PHANTOM BOYFRIEND and LOVE POTION (mysterious, magical, romantic books for younger teens). I went through editing the same as with my traditional publishers (at the time I was writing a cloning series for Berkely called REGENERATION). It took two years before the first two books were out in floppy disk format. They packaged these books in little boxes with disks inside and covers like real books. Readers could also buy two-books-in-one paperbacks of these books. I love these books and was excited to embark on a new type of publishing. This was years ago before the Kindle or Nook. But there were e-readers. The best was the Rocket Reader. The first out into the world and a great device. But it didn't survive and the others that followed had battery problems and were still too expensive to lure readers away from paperbacks. (Not that I wanted to do this -- although I have many e-books on my I-Pad, I continue to buy and prefer paper books).

So I had these e-books published and online waiting for readers. Guess what happened? Not much. In 2001, kids weren't going online to look for books. My annual royalty statements from the e-books totaled less than $5. Still I loved these books and was glad to have them out there.In 2003, I gave it one more try and my favorite e-books, DOUBLE VISION, was published by Amber Quill. This YA is about a teen girl who must pretend to be an alternate version of herself in a parallel world to prevent a murder in her family. Still the market wasn't there yet so few sales.

Jump ahead to January 2011. I've published over 35 traditional YA/MG books and still have the 6 e-books out, too. My publisher, Flux, decided to try an experiment by offering my THE SEER book, #1. DON'T DIE DRAGONFLY for free for a month to Kindle readers. Many people received e-readers for Christmas and were eager for free books. My book sold like crazy! My book made it down to #12 in the top free books for Kindle. In May, my publisher tried this again with my book DEAD GIRL WALKING, and it made it down to #7 in the top free-books. Now I seem to make more e-book sales than paperback sales.

And my e-books published years ago--suddenly they're selling. I'm receiving royalty checks larger than 3 digits! E-books have come a long way -- and I've enjoyed going along for the ride.

CHECK OUT MY E-BOOKS:

Mail-Order Monster
Love Potion
Phantom Boyfriend

BB: Guest Post + Contest: Jess C Scott

Next up is Jess C Scott!! Enjoy!

Staying Focused as an Indie Author, by Jess C Scott

Jess C Scott, author of The Cyberpunk Elven Trilogy and EyeLeash: A Blog Novel
Independent publishing offers tremendous opportunities to writers everywhere. The indie publishing model is speedy and efficient, and allows a writer to have full creative and business control.

I decided to self-publish my debut book (EyeLeash: A Blog Novel) in June 2009. I published my second book in August 2009. Both these books (and many of my subsequent novellas/novels) aren’t exactly “commercially categorizable.” They don’t fall neatly into a specific category. These types of books can be problematic for mainstream commercial publishers, who have certain expectations with regards to the business of commercial genre fiction.

Some writers write for the money. Others write because they love to write, and want to share their work with the world. I happen to fall somewhere in the middle.

My ultimate goal in life has always been to “making a living from writing” (I’m currently 24, and have one more “basic financial goal” to meet in 2011).

I’ve noticed that there seems to be a lot of focus on how much indie authors earn, and how many copies they sell. There seems to be a lot more emphasis on quantity, instead of quality. Maybe this is because society values money and materialism. I’ve had to question my own values and beliefs, along the way, to decide for myself what I really wanted to do (as an indie author).
At the end of the day, I want the stories I write to be able to stand the test of time. Earning an income from writing is important to me, but I cannot do it at the expense of my vision as an author/artist/non-conformist.

What I’m making money from is just as (if not more) important to me, as how much I’m earning (with regards to writing/publishing).

Indie publishing offers me the opportunity to get stories out in a timely fashion, and create stories that I want to write, not what a conglomerate dictates to me is right for a particular genre/market.

As an artist, I’m very careful to ensure that I do not exploit this opportunity, which traditional commercial publishing is not be able to provide for me. This is why I continue to stay focused on the characters and storyline.

Making money is great. But making money from providing something of meaningful value is even better.

To all the indie authors out there who share a similar perspective: Do what you love. Keep improving. Keep going.

By engaging more intimately with the books you read and share with others, you become as closely bound to the pages as the pages are bound to one another. Read, Remember, Recommend enhances the reading experience and makes each book you encounter an integral part of who you are.

Wdebo's Review: I have never had a book journal before, or anybook that suggested books, so I was very excited to be able to "review" RRR. RRR is such a wonderful resource for YA lovers and just book lovers in general. I was going through all of the titles and all I could think was, "Oh my god, I haven't read so many books." All of the books are divided into sections, which is nice, now my new personal goal is to be able to read at least one book from each section.

There is also a little creativity in the back, blank spaces in which you can write down books you've loaned out (as a stingy-book-horder...that's nice :) ) and books you've read and places to jot down your thoughts. One of the reasons I started my book blog was to be able to rememeber all of the books I've read and my thoughts on them, and so RRR will be the same thing, I just don't need internet access to access it :D

Also, it is very well organized and the tabs look cool and professional.

Cafe Cover Chat: Nice cover, I think it's kinda cute looking (B+)

All in all, a great reasource that is sure to sit on my bedside table for a long time.

~~~~
Now we have an interview with the wonderful Rachelle Knight, enjoy!
~~~~
Wdebo: Please describe yourself with three adjectives.
Rachelle: A creative, messy dreamer!

W: Please describe a typical day.
R: First thing is rushing around getting my little boy ready for school: making chocolate milk, finding socks and something amazing for show-n-tell, packing a lunch, and creating "Wolverine" spikes in his short hair with gel (who would have known?). After getting him to school my three year old little boy and I have breakfast and then we both 'check our email'. He has his own computer, which allows me to work on my blog and other journals. We have playtime together which is mostly playing Indiana Jones - I follow him around our house with a Nerf gun shooting bad guys. In the afternoon we pick up my five year old from school and then participate in a myriad of lessons: karate, swimming and soccer. After dinner, we watch "Monster Buster Club" and "Johnny Test" on Disney as a family and then when my boys are in bed, I read for at least two hours - in a bubble bath and bed. The best part of my day!
W: Why did you decide to write Read, Recommend, Remember?
R: My inspiration for creating the journal came from a cluttered purse full of reading suggestions on scraps of paper - a lot of which were books I learned about from following award and notable lists. When I set out to buy a journal to keep these suggestions organized, nothing existed that provided the awards and notable lists nor places to kept track of everything I wanted to buy and recommend to others. In addition, as a book club member, I was always looking for ways to keep my thoughts and discussion points about reading available for discussing. The Read, Remember, Recommend journal was the marriage of both needs

W: What did you do to compile all of the books? Did you have to do a lot of research?
R: I researched through the internet almost exclusively. There are a few sites available that have fairly comprehensive lists of lists, but for the most part each of these were found individually. I became an expert at Google search! I am a computer programmer, so I created a database and wrote a program to take in all the data and perform the cross-referencing of the awards. This made it easier to keep all the data together.

W: What is your favorite color?
R: Green!

W: If you were stranded on an island and could only bring five things what would they be?
R:
1. Flint. I have watched enough "Survivor" episodes to be proficient at starting a fire!
2. Fishing gear - a girl's gotta have something to put on that fire.
3. A tarp. Again, too much "Survivor" watching.

Contest: Night World #1 and Night World Fan Guide

Now, through the Vampire Diaries (Which, I still need to read) craze...has come Night World. And what do I have for my lovely blog readers? Well, just five copies of the first Night World and five of the Fan guide...so let's see that's...ten winners!! :)
Yeah, exciting huh? I'm really want to read these books!! So, here is a brief description about each one...

Night World No. 1: Secret Vampire; Daughters of Darkness; Spellbinder
Vampires, werewolves, witches, shapeshifters -- they live among us without our knowledge. Night World is their secret society, a secret society with very strict rules. And falling in love breaks all the laws of the Night World.
In Secret Vampire, Poppy thought the summer would last forever. Then she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Now Poppy's only hope for survival is James, her friend and secret love. A vampire in the Night World, James can make Poppy immortal. But first they both must risk everything to go against the laws of Night World.

Fugitives from Night World, three vampire sisters leave their isolated home to live among humans in Daughters of Darkness. Their brother, Ash, is sent to bring the girls back, but he falls in love with their beautiful friend. Two witch cousins fight over their high school crush. It's a battle between black magic and white magic in Spellbinder.

Night World: The Ultimate Fan Guide

You loved Secret Vampire and are counting down to the Strange Fate apocalypse. But who was the first made vampire? How do you properly greet a witch? And why are shapeshifters and werewolves rivals? Prepare to test your Night World knowledge with trivia questions from all nine books; get the inside information about the clans, the soulmate principle, Circle Daybreak, and the four Wild Powers; and take two quizzes to find out how you fit into the Night World.
Best of all, L.J. Smith shares her inspiration for the series, answers the questions you've been asking, and even reveals fun facts about herself in this official guide. Plus, look for the sneak peek at the dramatic conclusion to the series, Strange Fate!

Doesn't that just sound great?

Contest: Beautiful By: Amy Reed

-CLOSED-

Yeah!! Beautiful is coming out tomorrow :) And I am so excited to read it! To celebrate I have 5 copies to giveaway. I know...intense huh? :)

So...here are some information.

When Cassie moves from the tiny town where she has always lived to a suburb of Seattle, she is determined to leave her boring, good-girl existence behind. This is Cassie’s chance to stop being invisible and become the kind of girl who’s worth noticing.

Stepping into her new identity turns out to be easier than Cassie could have ever imagined...one moment, one choice, will change everything.

Cassie’s new existence both thrills and terrifies her. Swept into a world of illicit parties and social landmines, she sheds her virginity, embraces the numbness she feels from the drugs, and floats through it all, knowing that she is now called beautiful. She ignores the dangers of her fast-paced life…but she can’t sidestep the secrets and the cruelty.

Cassie is trapped in a swift downward spiral tinged with violence and abuse, and no one—not even the one person she thought she could trust—can help her now.

Sounds awesome huh? Click HERE for an excerpt of the book!

And don't you just LOVE the cover? Haha I do...except her eyes look like raccoons tho, wouldn't it take a hella lot of time to remove all of that eyeliner?

Now onto the rules....

The contest will end on October 26th.

If you could become a totally new person how would you change yourself?
