Wdebo's Review: In the beginning I was so excited to start watching this drama. Such an all-star cast, you've got Megan Lai (From The Story of Time, Silence, etc), Baron Chen (From Fated to Love You) and finally Legon Li (From Honey and Clover).

In the beginning it was pretty good, a pretty good idea, and I loved Baron's character, I wasn't such a big fan of him when he was Dylan in Fated to Love You, but in Because of You he was just ADORABLE! And of course I love Lego Li because he is so cute, a wonderful singer/songwriter, and he was an amazing actor. And of course Megan is such a great actress, I really liked her in The Story of Time. But after a while, the whole drama just started to infuriate me. There seemed to be something wrong with all of the characters, and I absolutely HATED Xing Ye Zheng, but I really liked Tanaka in Cape No. 7.

Wow, that just seems like there is only bad things in this drama, which isn't true...there are good. I really loved Sun Fan's grandfather he was very funny and cute and so was Sun Fan's father. I was surprised how slowly the love developed, but I was disappointed how fast the love came at the end and also the ending was not the most creative (flashbacks aren't that good of endings). But the story was pretty good...who doesn't want their favorite idol to want to fight for your love, I know that if Show was going to do that, I would be over the moon about it.

All in all, this drama was not horrible, it was just not the best drama I ever watched. I would reccomend this drama to someone who watches a lot of dramas and needs kind of like a filler drama.

Front and Center By: Catherine Gilbert Murdock

Title: Front and Center
Author: Catherine Gilbert Murdock
HARDBACK
Amount of Pages: 272
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Books for Children
Release Date: October 19, 2009
Geared Towards: Teens + Dairy Queen fans
Extra Info: This is the third and last book of the Dairy Queen trilogy. [List on bottom]
From: Library

"So I guess you could say that the weekend ended a lot better than it began, although that wasn't so hard, because when you're at the bottom all directions point up."

Summary: After several weeks of taking care of her brother, Win, D.J. Schwenk is finally (and she never thought she would say this) and thankfully back at school. School should be great, right? Her best friend, Amber, has finally returned, basketball season is finally kicking off and she's hoping to be able to score a good scholarship, and her ex, Brian has been totally forgotten. But things get a lot more complicated then she thought they would ever be. Her best bud, Beaner, super, excitable, attention-magnet, Beaner, has asked her out on a date (!!), an actual date date, not a buddies hanging around kinda date. College searching turns out to be way tougher then she ever expected and she really does not know if she can find her leadership skills on the court. And when Brian sneaks back into her life, D.J. has to ask herself, has she really forgotten him? Or will she be willing to risk getting her heart stomped on all over again, just for a chance to be with him?

Wdebo's Review: Yeah! D.J. is finally back for the last (sob) book in the Dairy Queen trilogy. I still remember waking up at 5 AM just to finish Dairy Queen when I was in 7th grade, that's how much I enjoyed it. D.J. has gone through a lot since then, from falling in and out then in love with Brian, playing football then basketball, and living with her newly-gay best friend being ostricized.

I love how in Dairy Queen it follows D.J. as she works towards her self-confidence and playing football, but in Front and Center it shows D.J. as she grows as a basketball player and the stress of college applications (!!) yet though the subjects are different D.J. has still retained her same humor, sarcasm and realness that has made me love this series.

Everything in this book is so real, though I have not started college applications yet (next year!) I am still feeling stressed just thinking about it. D.J. has a very real way of approaching everything, learning to cope with everything and just growing. All of the conflicts, both external and inernal, are really something teenagers deal with every single day so it's very easy to relate to. However, it was still kind of annoying listening to D.J. grumbling about whether or not to be with Brian, I just wanted to take her and shake her and just tell her to make up her mind! And sometimes, the book gets kind of boring, because there is just a maturity in it that a lot of YA books don't seem to have, but it gets good after a while.

I really like the chracter of Beaner, he is just such a sweet and great guy, but I just felt so bad for him, because it was obvious that D.J. didn't like him like that, like how she liked Brian, but he was so in love with her...sigh, it was sad to read. But I was also very surprised how fast, Beaner and D.J. got together, because one minute Beaner asks D.J. out on a "date" and she's all like, come on it has to only be a friend hang-out time, and she's totally clueless, and the next they're making out on his bed. It felt a little fast to be believable.

Cafe Chit Chat: I like the cover, it's kinda cute, and the sky is muy pretty also :) (B+)

All in all, a very good ending to the Dairy Queen trilogy, that hopefully all of the Dairy Queen lovers will enjoy. And if you haven't started this trilogy yet, you should!

Japan Ai: A Tall Girl's Adventures in Japan

Title: Japan Ai: A tall girl's adventures in Japan
Author: Aimee Major Steinberger
PAPERBACK
Amount of Pages: 171
Publisher: Go! Comi
Release Date: September 1, 2007
Geared Towards: Teens + Japan lovers
From: Public Library

"We bought our plane tickets the next day."

Summary (Fom B.O.B): In Japanese, "Ai" means "Love"-and if you love Japan, get ready to dive head-first into the incredible world of Japanese pop-culture!

Join Aimee Major Steinberger (a professional animator with a passion for all things cute) on the ultimate otaku vacation! Visit fantasy restuarants, maid cafes, and the world's most exclusive doll store! Cosplay on the infamous Harjuku Street! Attend an outrageous all-female Takarazuka musical! See beautiful shrines, hot springs, stores full of manga, and so much more! Aimee captures it all in a manga journal that is both adorable and breathtaking!

Wdebo's Review: Though I am not a GIANT Japan lover like some of my friends I know, but I went to Japan for the first time last year so I thought this would be a good book to read...and I'm a sucker for a cutesy graphic novel :)

The drawings were all adorable, I love how Aimee is able to capture the humerous and beautiful and culture-filled parts of Japan in her drawings. She can switch easily between manga-esque drawings and actually full on sketches...totally admirable. It was cool to see a lot of things that I saw on my trip to Japan and also to learn a lot about Japanese culture. Japanese culture is very interesting since sometimes it is just so outrageous and out-there, it was great to see it all through the eyes of a fellow foreigner, her comments were quite funny. And her adventures and the fun she had made me want to go back to Japan.

Cover Chit Chat: It's so cute and...pink (!) always a plus :) (B+)

All in all, for those that are in LOVE with Japan or those who are just interested in Japanese culture, this is a very good book for you!

A-Mei

O.M.G. I can't believe it has taken me so long to spotlight A-Mei. She was the very first idol I have ever known (My parents introduced her to me when I was five or so, and I have loved her music ever since!)

She has a wonderfully gorgeous voice, and I hope everone can listen to her music!

Chinese Name: 張惠妹 (Zhang Hui Mei)
English Name: A-Mei
Birthday: August 9, 1972
Age: 37
Birthplace: Taitung, Taiwan
Instruments: Vocals, drums, and guitar
What she does: Singer

Background Info: Because A-Mei is a Taiwanese Aboriginese, she was exposed to tribal music at a young age. (It seems there are so many Taiwanese Aborigonese singers now...but they all have amazing voices ^_^)

One of her most famous songs, that was one of the first songs I ever listened to her is called 姊妹 (Jie Mei) (Sisters), it was the title song of her very first album. My family + friends sing it everytime we go karaokeing! Such a classic!

Now, for some music to enjoy!

The first song, Can I hug you?, is also another classic by her...such a simple and beautiful song! (English Translation on bottom!)

    Subs By: caruthersm

    It's raining outside,
seems just like my bleeding heart,
    Loving you for that long
    was actually not that easy.

When it comes to separating our things,
    tomorrow it won't even matter.
    The clothes left at home;
when you have the time, take them back.

Don't think that love always ends happily,
I'm not willing to constantly find excuses.
I won't force you to do this for me.
Your heart is not here; it still hurts whether or not you stay.

    Can I hug you, lover?
Let me cry on your shoulder.
If today we were to break up,
let me happily cry out loud.

    Can I hug you, darling?
Let me call you this for one last time.
    You are also unhappy.
    I will leave, smiling.

Next song, I want Happiness?, another beautiful song by her...enjoy!

Hope you enjoy! And please comment!

Very LeFreak By: Rachel Cohn

Title: Very LeFreak
Author: Rachel Cohn
HARDBACK
Amount of Pages: 320
Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers
Release Date: January 12, 2010
Geared Towards: Teens (Tech lovers + those in between)
From: Random Buzzers (ARC)

"Very LeFreak was indeed the freakiest of the freaks. Not the cool brand of fun freak. She was the worst case of freak, a complete and utter loser"

Summary (From B.O.B): MEET VERY LeFREAK

playlist maker, party planner, heartbreaker, good-time girl who can't enough good time, especially when she's online (all the time). She's the girl everyone wants to know, the girl other girls want to be like, and the girl all the guys want to be with.

But underneath all of that is the real girl: Veronica. The Veronica who misses her mother, who wishes she cared more about school, and who wants to be a good friend.

It's just that, well, Very can't stop checking her e-mail, sending text messages, making playlists, updating her Web site, finding new online shopping sites to spend money she doesn't have. Her electronic addictions are getting in the way of everything else: her scholarship at Columbia is at risk, she's facing academic probation, her friends have just about given up on her. So what's a girl to do?

Why, escape, of couse. To rehab at ESCAPE, Emergency Services for Computer-Addicted Persons Everywehre, in quiet, leafy Vermont. Where Very will be forbidden to use anything electronic: goodbye, iPhone. So long, laptop. But maybe twenty-eight days of being unplugged will be just what the doctor/dean/great-aunt ordered to clear Very's head-and her heart.

Wdebo's Review: As a big Rachel Cohn fan I could not wait to open and read Very LeFreak. I had very high expectations for this book, and though it did not meet them, Very LeFreak was still a very well written book by Rachel.

I loved the idea of a technology adddict...seeieng as how I spend numerous hours on my laptop, not really doing much, I can totally relate (it pisses my mom off so much). Except even though the book says that Very is on her laptop during the wee hours of the morning, it doesn't feel like she's a super big technology obsesse...she seems more like a song obsesse then anything.

I was also very surprised at how quickly Very adjusted to ESCAPE...Even though Very did want to get better, but I thought there would be at least some kicking and screaming instead of serine compliance.

I'm not really a big fan of Very she is not really the kind of character I like, but at least she does want to get better and do the right thing, she just seems to not have as much control as she wants over herself. Lavina/Jennifer is a nice person, and the thing that annoys me is that Bryan is shown as a yoga-loving vegan...or something like that just because he's from Oregon and the truth is most Oregonians AREN'T hippies/lumberjacks/yoga-loving/vegans!!

Cafe Cover Chat: I like this cover, it looks pretty, except they show Very as very shy and stuff while she is actually very wild and hyper. (B+)

All in all, a good book that many Rachel Cohn fans are sure to enjoy!

A Child Called It By: Dave Pelzer

Title: A Child Called “It”: One Child’s Courage to Survive
Author: Dave Pelzer
PAPERBACK
Amount of Pages: 160
Publisher: Health Communications, Inc.
Release Date: September 1, 1995
Geared Towards: Older Readers
Extra Info: The is the first book in the trilogy, the second book is called The Lost Boy and the third book is called A Man Named David.
From: Library
“’You are a nobody! An It! You are nonexistent! You are a bastard child! I hate you and I wish you were dead! Dead! Do you hear me? Dead!’”

Summary: A Child Called It follows Dave Pelzer as a child living in an abusive household. He was brutally beaten and starved while his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother played “games” with him and punished him for being a “bad boy.” He had to learn to survive these games, to live till the next day, his mother no longer considered him a son, but a thing, an it.

His brothers and his mother’s pets were all treated like kings, but he was treated like dirt. The family’s unwilling servent. This novel goes from before the whole abuse started to the miraculous salvation of Dave Pelzer.

Wdebo’s Review: Oh wow, I read The Lost Boy a long time ago and had been dying to read A Child Called It forever, so when I finally got to it I was so glad I did. A Child Called It was a book that was really hard to get through, but so well written that it was hard to put down.

I think that child abuse is a topic that we have been trying to push away, but it’s very important that people understand it and see that it really can happen, A Child Called It just shows that, and it is a very important book to read, to understand.

I think it’s just horrible how any mother could do all those horrible things to their children, I mean, they gave BIRTH to the child, they should not treat them like that! And the father is this book is such a damn coward, he knew all that was happening, but he kind of “tried” to help him, but he failed, he’s the “man of the household!” He should be able to tell his drunken wife to stop hitting and abusing her son!! I also hate his siblings because they could have helped David but instead they just helped hurt him. To make a long story short, I just think his whole family is horribly evil, to allow for such an atrocious thing to happen.

Cover Chit Chat: The cover is very inspirational, but that hand kinda scares me (B-)

All in all, a wonderfully written story that everyone should read to understand the horrors of child abuse and the beauty of miracles and hope.

Monga (Movie)

I have my final for Chinese School today...wish me luck!! ~

Title: Monga
Language: Chinese (Mandarin + Taiwanese)
Release Date: February 5, 2010
Director: Doze Niu
Cafe Warning: Since this movie is about gangs/the Chinese Mafia there is a lot of violence especially at the end, for those who are watching the english subbed version, there is A LOT of swearing.
Actors: Ethan Ruan (!!) as Monk, Mark Chou as Mosquito, Rhydian Vaughan (Hottie!) as Dragon Lee and Ju-Lung Ma as Boss Geta
Extra Info: Click HERE for the official site (English)

"What is the meaning of all this fighting?
What the f*** is meaning?! I've only heard of brotherhood, never of meaning"
The english subbed trailer...enjoy!

Summary: *Note: Since this movie is Chinese, so the names are translated from the chinese nicknames, that's why they are so weird* Mosquito had been transfered around to so many schools, and then came the day he went to Monga. Even though he didn't know how to fight very well, he was still able to anger the "head" of his class, and he and his gang decided to beat Mosquito up after class. But they weren't able to catch him. While Mosquito was dodging, four friends Monk, Dragon, Monkey and A-Po, saw him and decided to let him into their little "Prince Gang" in which Dragon's father,Geta, was the head of the whole big mafia in their territory.

After all five of them began enjoying their gangster lifestyle, disaster struck. The "head" of Mosquito's class, hurt Dragon's girlfriend, and in retaliation the five friends decided to get a little revenge on him, but instead, they accidently killed him.

Geta is furious, and decides to punish them. After a while he sends them to a training camp for mafia members. While that is happening, Mosquito falls in love with a prostitute and all five of their friendships grow. However, as tensions between all the mafias grow, greed and desire takes over to a giant wave of kills.

Wdebo's Review: Whenever my father goes to California he always buys a lot of Taiwanese movies, usually those really boring, absolutely no romance in it (:O ) kind of movies, that only has a lot of fighting in it. But when he brought Monga back, at first, I was like "ok, that looks like a horrible movie as usual" but when I saw it was Ethan that was acting in it, I had to watch it and I am so glad I did!

This movie starts out as sort of a comedy, it seems to poke fun at Taiwanese gangsters/mafias and the steryotypes that surround them. I for one, found myself randomly laughing out loud at random scenes, especially the scene where Mosquito was fighting with the small gang and he accidently stepped in dog doo doo so he was able to defeat them by waving his dirty shoe around. But after a bit the movie started to get very dark, the scene where they kill the "head" of the class was pretty shiver-making, I mean superglueing someone's facial organs together is pretty disgusting. And then at the end it just became an outright blood bath, which I don't like watching, but I can still stand (except you see someone get their ear chopped off...I mean...eww)

I really liked all of the actors, I think they portrayed all of their roles very well, the acting was muy bueno especially for a Taiwanese movie. I liked the two friends (Monkey and A-Po) the most...they were hillarious.

The ending was just depressing, when you watch it, you'll know what I mean...especially the interaction between Mosquito and the prostitute girl...it was very sad making. :(

All in all, an amazing Taiwanese movie...if you can find the english subbed version (or if you know chinese already and don't need it) I would highly reccomend that you watch this movie. I really hope it becomes very popular because it is such a wonderfully done movie.

Poisoned Honey By: Beatrice Gormley

Title: Poisoned Honey
Author: Beatrice Gormley
HARDBACK
Amount of Pages: 320
Publisher: Knopf
Release Date: March 9, 2010
Geared Towards: Teens
From: Random Buzzers (ARC)

"Remember Safta's story about Miryam's Well? You have a gift for finding the opposite kind of well: one that poisons all who drink from it."

Summary (From B.O.B):

Who is Mary Magdalene? A prostitute? A saint?
A madwoman? A goddess?

This story begins with Mariamme, a vulnerable girl who knows little of the world. Much as Mari wants to control her own destiny, she soon learns she has no such power. She must do as her father and brother see fit, and when tragedy strikes, she must marry a man she does not love and enter a household where she is not welcome, for the good of her family.

But then an Egyptian wisewoman teaches her a small way to comfort herself-by escaping into the spirit world. In this hidden realm, Mari is exhilarated to find she has power. Here, she does control her fate. But does she really? Or does the magic control her?

This gripping portrait of one of the most misunderstood and controversial figures in the Bible traces a young girl's path through manipulation and possession, madness and healing, to a man who will change the world forever.

Wdebo's Review: Since I am not a very religious person, this book was a little confusing since there are some biblical references that I had to ask my friends about, but apart from that, to me it is actually just a very nicely told story.

I have actually never actually been able to read a lot of books set in this kind of setting and idea, so it was a nice change of pace. The writing was quite well done, a little shaky at times but not bad.

The character of Mariamne annoyed me sometimes by the way she talked and also when she was possessed her actions were annoying also at times, but she was pretty ok overall through the whole book. I do like how she was able to tie together Mariamne and Matthew, the tax collector's son, story together, but their interaction together was a little disappointing, I thought there would be some kind of romance brewing between them. Which leads me to another thing, I was kind of sad how there wasn't that much romance in the book, I guess since it is focusing more on Mariamne's growth and how she fights her possession, but a little romance never hurts! :)

Cafe Cover Chat: I think the cover is pretty pretty it's a nice shad of purple however, there is something that makes it seem a little averege. (B)

All in all, a good book for those more religious readers, but it can also be an entertaining read for those who aren't very religious.

Still Sucks to Be Me: More All-True Confessions of Mina Smith, Teen Vampire

Title: Still Sucks To Be Me: More All True Confessions of Mina Smith, Teen Vampire
Author: Kimberly Pauley
HARDCOVER
Amount of Pages: 384
Publisher: Mirrorstone
Release Date: May 11, 2010
Geared Towards: Teens
Extra Info: This is the sequal to Sucks To Be Me [Click HERE for review]
From: Author (ARC)

"I can think of a lot of ways things could have worked out better. I'm thinking they couldn't have worked out any worse."

Summary: Mina Hamilton, uh hum, Mina Smith, is now an "all-powerful, all-knowing, in-control" vampire, haha, as if. As exciting as being a vampire is, there are just somethings that really suck (figuratively...and a little literally). Her boyfriend,George, is leaving her to "connect" with his parents in Brazil, but Mina is pretty sure he is just cavorting around Brazillian beaches, with Brazillian girls in bikinis. Becoming a vampie means, that she has to "die" and be relocated, which means she has to leave all her friends behind, but at least her best friend knows the truth (shh, don't tell the VRC). And the drinking the blood...is totally kind gross. Also, her parents are now apparently her brother and sister-in-law, weirdness.

Things seem to get better (or is it worse?) when she gets to her new home, which is in the middle of no where. Grady, the cute yet kinda stupid jock, won't leave her alone, she is now the "trendsetter" of the school, and the only teen vampire in her town, Cameron, is starting to make her forget George from his deliciously spicy smell...and he seems to be hiding some secrets that Mina is dying to know about.

Wdebo's Review: Yeah! I was actually quite excited for this book, because I really wanted to see what Mina would be like as a vampire.

The book keeps all of the sarcastic nature of Mina which was nice...it's nice to hear sarcastic comments about the world that sound like something I would make. Except sometimes I felt like the sarcasm took away from feelings of some parts, and also sometimes her problems just seemed kind of annoying...and she just sounded annoying.

Mia is actually not that bad of a character, she is actually quite amusing. And I really loved Cameron...I guess I just have a thing for the strong, silent, blood sucking types ;)

Cafe Cover Chat: Follows in the footsteps of the Sucks to Be Me cover...it's ok...like the blue! (B+)

All in all, a good sequal to Sucks to Be Me, which the fans of the first book, should be able to enjoy and get into.
